EEOC Makes It Easier for Employees to File Charges of Discrimination

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) launched an online tool last week that provides workers with easier access to its discrimination resources and complaint processes.  The agency’s Public Portal allows individuals to submit online initial inquiries and requests for intake interviews.  These inquiries and interviews are often the precursor to filing a formal charge of discrimination with the agency.
The new system enables workers to sign and file a charge online after it is prepared by the EEOC.  Workers can also use the portal to update contact information, agree to mediate a charge of discrimination, upload documents to a charge file, check on the status of the charge, receive documents and messages related to the charge from the agency.  The portal does not permit online filing of charges that were not prepared by the EEOC or complaints of discrimination against federal agencies.
The Public Portal’s features are now available for newly filed charges as well as those filed on or after Jan. 1, 2016 that are in investigation or mediation.
