Rail Construction Impacting HEC

May 26, 2017

Construction has begun in the airport area, impacting Hawaii Employers Council.  Shimmick/Traylor/Granite (STG) has been contracted by HART to build the Airport Guideway and Stations between Aloha Stadium and Middle Street.  The project is planned for substantial completion in 2021.

After the Memorial Day weekend, heavy construction equipment will be used and stored in areas adjacent to HEC, specifically Keehi Lagoon Park and the vacant lots next to HEC (i.e., the old Unitek and Alert Alarm lots).

How does this affect you, as an HEC member?

  • More offsite training.  Due to noise and traffic concerns, more training classes will be scheduled outside of HEC.  Therefore, if you enroll in training classes, please be sure to carefully check the location of the event.

  • Potential traffic flow changes in the area.  As STG performs work in the area, traffic flow may be impacted and will vary as STG progresses through the project.  Currently, there are no lane closures on Waiwai Loop during the day.  However, Aolele Street near Aolewa Place to the entrance of Delta Cargo will have east-bound lanes shifted to the shoulder between 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., due to potholing and geotechnical borings.

  • No access from Keehi Lagoon Park.  The gate separating HEC and Keehi Lagoon Park is no longer accessible due to the construction.   Entering HEC from the Park is not an option anymore.
